Cybex Yema Review

B Loves: All the advantages of a structured upright carrier but with the comfort of a wrap carrier.

WIN the Cybex Yema in Manhattan Grey

Coming in several plain colours or in the Fashion collections, the Yema comes in its own travel bag, handy for popping under the pushchair or taking with you when traveling.

The front portion of the carrier has adjustments that you can make to fit the size and weight of your baby, so make sure that you do that first before putting it on. There are easy to read guides inside the waist belt seams to help you. Make sure that you adjust these as your baby grows.

Putting the carrier on is a breeze. The Yema has a widely padded waist belt, which will fit any parent. This wraps around your waist and buckles together for safety and you can adjust it to make sure it fits you well and that the baby’s weight is held across your pelvis, taking most of the strain off your shoulders.

Pick up your baby and hold him to you, then pull the front of the carrier up across him and pass the wide, padded straps over your shoulders. These criss-cross behind your back and you then bring the two ends together at the front. Pass them beneath your baby’s legs and tie firmly together at the front – and hey presto, that’s it! It’s actually a really quick and easy carrier to put on and the beauty of this one is that you can swap it between parents – handy if you’re out for the day and sharing baby wearing duties – and you don’t have to adjust endless straps and buckles before you put it on, as all the adjustment is made as you put it on.

Your baby’s legs and hips are held in a ‘m’ position, which is considered the best for healthy hip development and the fabric of the back panel holds your baby’s back securely in a slightly ‘c’ shape. There are no buckles or straps to dig into your baby and it all feels soft and smooth. There’s a neat little hood to protect your baby from the sun or wind and it can also be tucked away when you’re not using it.

While your baby is too young to be able to hold his head up for long, he should be on your front, facing you. This position promotes closeness and your baby can hear your heartbeat and be comforted by your familiar smell. When he can hold his head up, you can also hold the baby on your hip an then as he develops further and has good head and spine control, you can swap to carrying on your back.

When it comes to looking good, Cybex has a great range of plain colours and also fashion collection fabrics that mimic the pushchair range. In the plain colours, there are three denim fabrics in Stardust Black, Midnight Blue and Manhattan Grey. There’s a leather-look in Stardust Black and then there are the fashion fabrics in Birds of Paradise, Hide & Seek Butterfly, Koi Crystal Lized, the Jeremy Scott in black with gold wings and Space Rocket Pop Star by Anna K.

The carrier has been approved by Trageschule Hamburg, a German baby carrying consultancy. They have advised Cybex on the development of its carriers and it also provides training to Cybex personnel.

The Yema has also been approved by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute, which approves carriers as long as the correct hip position is used.
