Air quality in the nursery and in your home in general is very important. If you live in a big city, you will find that pollution can cause problems, especially if any members of the family have problems such as asthma. Even in the country, hayfever can cause misery to little ones as the pollen count rises during the spring and summer months. So if you are concerned about air quality, an air purifier is a good investment.

We tested the Vax Pure Air 300 Air Purifier by using the Awair air quality monitor.

The Pure Air 300 is quite a big beast – think of it being about the size of a large kitchen pedal bin. It is designed to sit in the corner of the room, so make sure you have the space for it, and then it can be used either manually or with certain settings to help you manage the air quality all day and night and even if you’re not at home.

Because it is a large machine, it can help you purify the air in even the largest of rooms (up to 120m²) and if you have it in a small room, you can leave the door open to help the cleaner air circulate through your house.

The purifier can cope with all kinds of pollutant – dust, pollen, viruses, bacteria and smoke from cooking as well as fumes from paint and furniture. It has a HEPA filter, a kind of filter used in medical setting which can extract 99% of even the smallest particles down to 0.3 microns. There is a display on the front that shows you the work of the machine in progress, which is reassuring.

There are five settings, so you could have it on low most of the time or if there is a sudden peak in pollution – if you’ve burned the toast or the pollen count is particularly high that day, you can turn it up. At its highest setting, it can be quite noisy but it’s handy to be able to give it a boost at times. When it’s on one of the lower setting, the sound is barely audible, so that would be the best way to use it in a nursery – though actually, babies do like white noise, so it could also be an aid to good sleep. There’s a remote control and timed settings (one, two, four, six and eight hours), so you could set the purifier to come on some time before your baby is due to go to bed and have the timer switch it off just as it’s bedtime. Alternatively, you can turn it on or off from the doorway without needing to go in your baby’s room and risk waking them from a good sleep.

When the filter needs changing, the machine will remind you so you can feel reassured that it will be working to its optimum at all times.
