Complementary Therapists

Complementary Therapies including aromatherapy, acupuncture etc

Who: Lisa Barnwell

What: As the founder of London’s first destination clinic for new mums and mum’s to be and only chosen provider to support Chelsea and Westminster’s private maternity clients with complementary therapies; Lisa Barnwell’s 12 years maternity experience as a hands on therapist (she’s a qualified Massage Therapist, Reflexologist, Aromatherapist and Ante- and Post-natal Yoga Teacher) plus her experience as a businesswoman ensures that she more than meets the needs of her high end clientele, before and after their pregnancies. Whether it’s helping senior women in business transition from the boardroom to the nursery, celebrities managing a publicly changing body shape or members of a Royal Family maintaining a low key profile Lisa’s discreet at-home services provide the services you need at times you need them. Her VIP days are the perfect option for a fast, immersive experience to get you feeling back in control or ready for your baby’s arrival and her packages of treatments ensure both you and your baby are very well cared for on a regular basis.

Like any new experience, pregnancy and new motherhood is a time of great change and potential excitement – but it can also bring up feelings of fear, panic and overwhelm. You may reflect on your own childhood and have very clear ideas of the parent you want to be but the hormonal changes, tiredness and speed at which your body changes can be happening may  leave you feeling less Mother Earth and more confused, isolated and “disconnected”. You’re You but not as you know it. Whilst you can read about the expected changes to your body and understand your baby’s development, most women find talking to an experienced professional generally helps readdress the balance and feelings of calm.

If you are choosing to have your baby privately you are generally afforded more time for your emotional wellbeing although most women say they chose their consultant for their medical expertise as much as their bedside manner. Feeling confident and comfortable to address your fears and share your concerns is an important part of your medical care but having time to express and release your feelings whilst in the safety and security of your own home can be far more effective. My treatments came about as a result of increasing requests for home visits to fit around busy schedules but the knock on effect has been a greater sense of personal connection and honesty where deeper issues are released.

Complementary therapies such as reflexology and aromatherapy can be extremely effective at gently relaxing and reducing anxieties so that the crux of the matter is revealed. It could be as practical as you don’t want your mother to stay immediately after the birth and need to find a great maternity nurse or your feelings around having sex during pregnancy or after the birth – no subject is off limits and I have heard most things by now. Good listening skills coupled with years of experience and a natural empathy and affinity for pregnancy equip me to be supportive and hold a space for whatever needs to be aired so that you and your baby can receive the maximum enjoyment during this precious time.

Who: South West London Osteopathy

What: Osteopathic treatment during and after pregnancy can be beneficial in a number of ways:

  • Easing some of the physical discomforts of pregnancy
  • Preparing for the demands of labour
  • Helping the mother to recover after birth

Pregnancy is a time when the body’s open to rapid change. It is a time when muscles and ligaments soften. Hormonal changes (the action of relaxin and oestrogen) increase fluid uptake in collagen fibres, making the spine and pelvis more flexible. Sometimes symptoms or aches are simply an expression of the body adapting to these changes and can be released effectively. Common complaints that osteopathy can help with during pregnancy and after:

  • Low back pain
  • Coccyx pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pubic Symphysis Dysfunction
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Head aches
  • Rib pain
  • Sacroiliac and hip pain

Website: www.swlondon-osteopathy.co.uk

Who: Mummy’s Physio

What: Their osteopaths work different techniques to diagnose medical conditions and allow the body to heal itself using its own healing mechanisms.
It is a completely natural therapy, which identify and treats mobility restrictions.
By working on the integral structure of the body and looking at how bones, muscles and connective tissues work together, osteopathy will restore your body to a balance.
The patient is assessed from a functional and postural angle, treating the body as a whole structure. For women and mothers, osteopathy helps with the discomfort of pregnancy, prepare for labour as well as the recovery especially if the birth has been difficult or there was some trauma (premature baby, breach). Osteopathy might reduce the need for medication during childbirth.
It will also help women with infertility problems, any pelvic or back pain and women suffering from endometriosis. Their osteopaths work closely with patients to help them achieve a high level of wellness by focusing on health education, injury prevention, and disease prevention. Services offered include:

  • Myofascial release, which use a constant pressure until release is achieved. It is primarily used for myofascial structures.
  • Cranial and Cranio sacral therapy use light touch to feel and ‘listen’ to your body much like when the medical historic is taken. Contacts are made at the base of the spine, the head as well as other areas depending on the symptoms.
  • Soft tissue or manipulations is a manual technique used to to stretch or relax dysfunctional soft tissue structures.
  • Visceral technique, our visceral organs form an important part of our anatomy and physiology, making them a significant consideration when formulating an osteopathic diagnosis and treatment plan. The holistic approach to osteopathy emphasises this. This is usually preformed through a gentle external massage often on the abdomen.

Who: Norwich Acupuncture Rooms

What: Traditional acupuncture is a trusted therapy based on ancient principles that have been developed, researched and refined for over 2,000 years, which aims to bring balance back to the body. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of ‘qi’, your body’s vital energy. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons, qi can become disturbed, depleted or blocked, which can result in some symptoms of pain and illness. Treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps with resolving your problem and enhancing your feeling of wellbeing. You may notice other niggling problems resolve as your main health complaint improves. Rebecca and her trusted team are all registered with UK regulatory bodies for traditional acupuncture, ensuring the highest quality and standards. Trained in using Chinese medical diagnostic techniques, such as pulse and tongue diagnosis, your practitioner will create the most appropriate and effective treatment programme for you.

Who – HypnoBirthing

course (the Mongan Method) taught by a certified HypnoBirthing practitioner with personal experience of using the approach, and of both hospital and home birth.

What: – HypnoBirthing is a complete antenatal course based on the belief that childbirth is normal, natural and healthy and that, in the absence of fear, most women can give birth calmly and gently. Over the course of five sessions, you will learn simple relaxation and breathing techniques, positive visualisations and be reminded of your body’s instinctive knowledge of how to give birth. Your birthing partner will learn how to support you to have the kind of birth you both want. My courses are not about having a “perfect birth”, but about helping you to have the best experience, whatever your circumstances. Whether you’re a first-time mother, already have children or are planning a managed birth through choice or circumstance, HypnoBirthing can help you approach your birthing day with calm and confidence.

Where: – I can work with you privately in your own home at a time to suit you, usually weekday evenings or Saturday mornings. I am based near Crouch End and work across North London including Crouch End, Muswell Hill, Highgate, East Finchley, Hampstead, West Hampstead and Islington.
