Baby Swimming

1-300x200Baby swimming – new guidelines

A new code of practice for swimming with babies has been introduced and was launched at Parliament in October.

The ASA, Water Babies and Splash About were involved with creating the new guidelines and have published a Code of Practice that all swim classes should follow.

The guidelines mean that parents and carers can be confident that baby swimming lessons and underwater photography are safe for their baby.

They say that all swimming teachers should have qualifications for working with babies and toddlers, that there should always be staff qualified in life saving and first aid, that all staff have criminal records checks, have attended a Safeguarding Children in Sport course and have been trained in its swim school’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

Babies should. they say, wear a disposable or reusable double-nappy and that pools should be at 32 degrees for children from birth to three months and at 30 degrees for children aged three to 12.

They also include guidelines on underwater photography.
