B Loves: A great lightweight and compact pump
The Medela Freestyle Flex is a small and light electric pump that has been designed around portability, so it’s the perfect pump if you’re going back to work or if you travel a lot. Its battery recharges from a USB cable, so you can use it wherever you are, with no need to carry lots of gear and no need to be tied to home.
It’s very easy to carry around with you as the motor unit fits right into the palm of your hand and it weighs under 300g.
The pump has a good charge time, allowing you to pump up to eight double-pumping sessions from a full charge, so you won’t need to keep heading back to a power source if you need to get on with your life.
There is a dedicated app that you can use for support when you are new to expressing or need to trouble-shoot. This connects with your smartphone and allows you to use functions such as timing your pumping sessions, tracking the settings you’ve used, and recording how much milk you’ve managed to expressed. Best of all, the app reminds you when the battery is low.
The pump’s illuminated digital control panel has touchscreen controls that allow you to control all the functions of the pump such as starting or pausing pumping, changing from one expression mode to the other and to change vacuum levels. There is a handy delayed start function, giving you ten seconds before pumping starts. This allows you time to get comfy, sit down, reach for your water and place the pump, especially when double pumping.
Having two shields allows you to pump from both breasts at the same time, which is great if you want to express more milk in half the time. It also collects and average of 18% more milk compared to pumping from one breast at a time.
The pump uses Medela’s Two-Phase Expression which copies your baby’s natural sucking rhythms. It starts with the first phase, which is fast to stimulate your milk flow, then the suction becomes slower.
